Oracle Temple Talk: Sustainable Community and Racial Justice

Dr. Joe Cole

Oracle Temple is a multi-faith church in Independence, VA. Each Temple Talk features a guest speaker and a theme for us to explore by engaging in high-level discussion and spiritual reflection.

Since the murder of George Floyd and renewed calls for racial justice in 2020, many intentional communities in the United States have questioned the relation between their projects and the values of racial equity and inclusion. While members are often drawn to community seeking to live more cooperatively and sustainably, US intentional communities remain predominantly white, and have often avoided difficult conversations around racism and racial justice. In this discussion, we will explore how racial justice and sustainability are linked through the values of health and healing, and how racial justice is thus an essential foundation for sustainable communities.

We will meet at 5:30 at the Pavilion in Oracle Campground for a pot luck dinner and the presentation will be held at 7:00 in the Peace Pentagon.

Dr. Joe Cole is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Joe has a Ph.D. in Philosophy, and is a Facilitator, Trainer, and Consultant for communities and non-profit organizations.
